Where Do Aggregators and Retailers Ship Your eBook?

Before you publish anywhere, keep this rule in mind: don’t list the same book through two different aggregators that ship to the same retailer — most retailers won’t accept the same title twice, and it creates confusion about which listing is the “real” one. Know where each distributor actually sends your book before you sign up for more than one.

Draft2Digital (free, includes the former Smashwords network)

Draft2Digital is now the main distribution platform behind what used to be handled separately by Smashwords — as of 2026, this is where you publish, not Smashwords directly. Current distribution includes:

  • The Smashwords store itself
  • Apple Books
  • Barnes & Noble
  • Kobo
  • Google Play
  • Scribd (now branded Everand)
  • OverDrive and Baker & Taylor (library platforms)
  • Additional library and subscription partners like Hoopla, Fable, and Vivlio
  • A partnership with Bookshop.org (added in 2026)

Since this list changes as D2D adds partners, it’s worth checking Draft2Digital’s current distribution page before publishing, rather than relying on any fixed list — this one included.

Lulu (free)

  • Lulu’s own website
  • Apple Books
  • Barnes & Noble
  • Kobo
  • Amazon (Kindle)

Amazon KDP (free)

  • Amazon’s Kindle store only — Amazon does not distribute through third parties, so this is a direct, single-destination channel.

Google Play (free)

  • Google Play Books directly — again, a single-destination channel.

XinXii

  • Free tier: Your book is available on the XinXii store itself.
  • Paid distribution tier: Adds Apple Books, Barnes & Noble, Amazon (Kindle), Kobo, and several European retailers including Casa del Libro, Livraria Cultura, Hugendubel, and the buch.de / buecher.de network.

See our full guide to selling on XinXii for current commission details.

Avoiding Overlap

Because Draft2Digital, Lulu, and XinXii’s paid tier can all reach Amazon, Apple Books, Barnes & Noble, and Kobo, publishing through more than one of these for the same retailer will likely cause a conflict.

A common, safe combination is: Amazon KDP direct (for the biggest single market) + one wide distributor (Draft2Digital is the most current, comprehensive option) for everywhere else.
